65.00 and up every 4-6 weeks)

where you live. |
Shoeing
None. Although some oxen do get
shod, the average trail rider will never need them.
Trim
Never if ridden or driven
with any regularity. |

Vaccinations and Worming
Most boarding stables
require vaccines to be given more than once a year. They also require either
daily or monthly worming.
Worming can cost up to
20.00 per dose. vaccines including West Nile when given by a vet, including
vet call will cost about 50.00 or more per visit.
This adds up to about
150.00 per year if you give all your own shots, and worm 4 times a year with
a quality wormer. More if you call a vet to do it and if board at a stables
that requires shots and daily worming. |
Vaccinations and Worming
Calf hood shots are
recommended. After that most cattle are wormed in the spring and fall. Some
only in the fall. Shots are often never given at all, or just to calves.
This is assuming your
cattle are not going to a feed yard where shots are required do to over
population and mixed populations.
Cost of calf hood
shots... about 5.00 if the vet isn't called. Cost of wormer, about 3.00 for
a 1500 lb animal. |
|
Castration
Horses are normally given a
drug and them castrated. The average cost for a vet call and the surgery is
about 150.00 for a 800 lb horse. |
Castration
Cattle can be banded at
birth to a few weeks old. The band costs about 25 cents and can be done by
anyone that has been shown how. The vet can also castrate an older steer for
about 1.50 - 3.00 depending on your vet. The cost of a farm call may or may
not be included. |
|
Feed
Horses need clean hay. No mold.
They need good quality graze and no fescue if you are breeding. Horses also
need clean water to be healthy.
|
Feed
Cattle can eat any quality of
hay and be perfectly healthy and happy. Mold is no issue. Water quality
doesn't have to be as good. Cattle can drink just about anything and not get
sick. |
|
Tack and equipment
Most horse owners will agree
that a horse if ridden needs a bridle, saddle pad and saddle. The average
horse owner now days wraps the legs or buys leg protectors. To show a horse
needs a winter blanket, neck sweats and needs to be stalled.
Basic needs is saddle,
bridle, and pad
|
Tack and equipment
A bovine needs a saddle,
saddle pad and nose bit with a set of light snap on reins. No head stall.
They do not need to be blanketed to stalled to be shown. They can, but do
not need leg wraps. Depending on the work you do. They are less prone to leg
problems due to work. Necks do not need to be sweated. Manes do not exist,
there for do not need extensive care. |
